PE — Polyethylene
The highest-volume polymer family in the world — and three distinct materials separated by nothing more than how the chains branch.
Every type of polyethylene shares the same backbone. What differs is chain branching and the degree of crystallinity that follows from it. That single variable splits materials with the same name into entirely different applications.
LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE
LDPE is heavily branched: soft, clear and easy to process, with the melt strength that makes blown film behave. LLDPE has short, regular branches and delivers far higher puncture and tear resistance — the basis of stretch film and heavy-duty sacks. HDPE is almost linear, giving the highest density, stiffness and chemical resistance of the three.
Film applications usually blend LDPE and LLDPE: the former carries processability and optics, the latter mechanical strength. In pressure pipe, PE 100 grades are the standard wherever long-term hydrostatic strength is specified.
