PP — Polypropylene

The most broadly used polyolefin — semi-crystalline, low in density and comfortable at temperatures where polyethylene gives up.

PP — Polypropylene

At roughly 0.90 g/cm³, polypropylene is among the lightest commercial polymers. Its melting range near 160 °C gives it a clear advantage over polyethylene in steam sterilisation and hot-fill applications. It also resists fatigue exceptionally well, which is why living hinges are made from PP rather than anything else.

Grade families

Homopolymer offers the highest stiffness and clarity but limited low-temperature impact strength. Random copolymer uses ethylene content to improve clarity and toughness, making it the choice for transparent packaging and pipe. Impact (block) copolymer is used where cold impact matters — crates, pallets and automotive parts.

Melt flow index usually decides the grade. Thin-wall injection parts with long flow paths need a high MFI; extrusion and sheet applications need a low MFI for melt strength. Choosing the wrong MFI is the real cause behind a surprising share of faults blamed on the mould or the machine.
